The variety of stereotype in Manga and Anime

Stereotype 1 – A weak hero?

Usually there are 2 different type of hero in manga/anime:

a) A weak hero but has a concealed power or talent.

b) A naive hero but has a kind and lover characteristic.

Example:

Souchirou Nagi - Tenjou Tenge; Shindou Hikaru- Hikaru No Go

Stereotype 2 – Teenager or young age

Age of characters are usually in the range 8 to 19 years old. They will behave like kids and frequently make wrong decisions.

Example:

Doraemon; Azumanga Daioh

Stereotype 3 – Protagonist Group

Protagonist character usually existed in a group which each member has their own skill and they also have the same ambition.

Example:

One Piece; Samurai Deeper Kyo; Naruto

Stereotype 4 – Antagonist mission

Antagonist group that was lead by a powerful leader and always make riot. They have their own ambition such as to control the world or get revenge of the protagonist group.

Example:

Homunculus – FMA; Juppongatsu- Rurouni Kenshin

Stereotype 5 – Giant Mecha

For fiction manga/anime, giant mecha is the fighting equipment existed in the battlefield.

Example:

Full Metal Panic; Gundam Seed; Macross; Neon Genesis Evangelion

The monopoly of AMG product in today's market

Nowadays the popularity of Anime, Manga & Games (AMG) product has growing largely in the market with a lot of products being sold worldwide. But is this just the case to meet customer’s demand or otherwise a marketing strategy to make money?

Manga Evolution

AMG product was produce in various steps from manga to anime and then anime to action figure and so on. Usually a new manga will be produced in a weekly magazine. It depends on the reader’s acceptance of the manga. If it was good enough, the publisher will take an action to publish the manga effectively.

1. Printed media

A well received manga will be compiled and then will be made into poster, wall scroll, and phone card. This is the beginning product for a new manga in the market. The production’s cost is very low even though it was produced in a large quantity. So, the price will be cheap and more customers can afford to buy it.

2. Anime & Games

A popular manga will be adapted into anime and then being transformed into video games and trading card games. The Original Sound track also being produced for additional promotion to the anime and games.

3. Action Figures and Plushies

Action figure is a replica of AMG character that is following a specific scale and similar to the original character. While Plushies are doll; it is a cute version of the AMG character that was specially designed for girls.

4. Accessories

There are a lot of AMG accessories can be found in the market such as keychain, bag, and many more.

5. Special edition and Art book

For a popular AMG, a special edition product and art book will be produced as a gift for the fans. Usually the product is limited and can be purchased in a specific time such as during anniversary etc.

Fan Fiction

Fan fiction is a creative writing by fans that want to hail the anime, manga & games (AMG) that they love. Fanfic is a re-written story or an alternative story base on favourite characters in AMG. Normally, the plot in fanfic is same as the original plot. There are many categories in fanfic, below are some of them:

1. Alternative Universe

This fanfic uses an alternative story for an AMG series. In this fanfic, writer has the freedom to change the plot and characters according to themselves.

2. Continuation

This fanfic is the continuation of the original plot of AMG series that had been finished. Usually this fanfic is written using the original concept without any changes. Some writer may chose to develop some plot that are not been considered by the original maker.

3. Het

This fanfic focuses on love plot between the male and female characters. This fanfic is focusing on relationship among them and sometimes it will also include sexual relationship.

4. Alternative Pairing

This fanfic also focusing on relationship between characters like Het category, but this time it focusing on dream characters of the fans, not the original pair as it was in the original series.

5. Crossover

This fanfic is written using characters from two or more different AMG series, usually by the same creator of the series.

6. Slash

This fanfic is about homosex relationship between characters. Usually the characters were chosen by the writer or fans.

What is doujinshi? Doujinshi is a manga that was made by amateur artists, either by using their original idea or by using materials from other popular anime, manga or games. The artwork result will depend on their credibility and drawing technique, some of them can even match the artwork of professional mangakas.Doujinshi is usually being made because of desire and not to make profit. All costs to produce doujinshi will be endured by doujinshi-ka themselves, and the selling price will depend on the producing cost. Because doujinshi was published in limited edition, the price usually will be higher than manga in market.

Basic anime category

1.Genre: Shonen

Shonen is the most available anime in market. Publicly it was made for boys; shonen means boy in Japanese. The main plot usually is about adventures, battles, and friendships. Examples: Dragon Ball, Naruto & One Piece.

2.Genre: Shoujo

Shoujo is a genre that was made for girls. The main plot is about lives and loves. Examples: Paradise Kiss.

Sub-genre: Mahou Shoujo

Anime about girls that have magic power in order to save the world and contains love plot. Examples: Sailormoon & Cardcaptor Sakura.

3.Genre: Kodomo

Special anime for children. Usually the plot is about moral values. Examples: Doraemon & Shin Chan.

4.Genre: Moe

This anime has very cute characters and usually about humor. Examples: Di Gi Charat.

5.Genre: Mecha

This anime brings a heavy theme, usually it delivers anti-war messages. This anime also has mechanical machines/mecha that will be very important in overall plot. Examples: Gundam & Eureka 7.

6.Genre: Ecchi

This anime contains light sexual fun without any sex part being shown.
